In the most southern part of the Peloponnesian peninsula, there is one of the most remote regions of the continental Greece; untouched by tourism, you feel like you have travelled back the time and you are in the 18th Century just before the Greek Revolution against the Turks. The landscape its cruel, there are no big trees and the mount Taygetus raises from nowwhere over the clouds. The north wind blows strongly, it is the only way of getting cooled down when temperatures can raise up to 38º.
One of the most beatiful places, where tourism is scarce; maniati people find there way to survive in a subsisiting economy, most of them are fishermen. Some have even opened restaurants in an attempt to provide some kind of service for the traveller passing by.
In Porto Kagio, we find the restaurant Ippocampos. Founded in the 1950's, has seen already too much of what humans are cappable of doing; during the greek Civil War. People of this regions are forged in battle, some might even say, they are the descendants of the mighty warriors: the spartans.
What its true, its that to get to know the real greeks. A trip to Mani must be a worth while.
